Background
Garfield AI, a UK-based artificial intelligence-powered legal services provider, won the first-ever court case, which had been won through an AI-based legal service against a human lawyer team.
In the current situation, the claimant is Tamires Camal Taquidir, a freelance human resource professional, trying to recover money from a hospitality company due to non-payment of her fees through the services provided by Garfield AI. She won the case and received £7,000 from the court after paying the £400 charge for their services.
All the legal papers have been filed through the Garfield AI, which includes legal documents, a witness statement, and a file. A human lawyer was appointed before the hearing commenced.
In May, Wandsworth County Court conducted a hearing which took three hours. The case was argued by lawyers from both parties, and finally, the court ruled in favor of Taquidir. The judgment also rejected a counterclaim filed by the defendant.
Dominic Li, the barrister instructed by Garfield AI, said the documents prepared by the platform were sufficient for the trial. The outcome, according to Philip Young, co-founder of Garfield AI, is a significant milestone for the legal industry and might increase access to legal services for those who cannot afford traditional representation.
Garfield AI was launched last year in April by the Solicitors Regulation Authority of the United Kingdom. This tool targets small cases that do not exceed £10,000 in monetary value and provides legal assistance at a much cheaper rate than most lawyers would charge for such service.
