Background:
Nexia Sydney has named Amber Matthews, former managing partner of DLA Piper Australia, as its new CEO. She will succeed Andrew Hoffmann in late January, marking an important leadership change for the firm.
A law graduate of the Australian National University, Matthews brings extensive experience in corporate law, M&A advisory, and risk management. Prior to her leadership role in Australia, she served as DLA Piper’s general counsel in London for eight years, overseeing compliance and risk management across the firm’s international operations.
Emma Zadow, the new Sydney chair with a legal background, said Matthews’s leadership experience in London and Sydney gives her skills that will be valuable to the accounting field.
Matthews’ career spans more than two decades in law and corporate advisory. She began at Phillips Fox in 1999, which later merged with DLA Piper, and subsequently led the firm’s corporate transactions team in the UK. Returning to Australia in 2019, she served as managing partner for DLA Piper’s Australian operations, guiding over 600 lawyers and business services professionals across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
Matthews praised his contributions and said continuity and teamwork will be important for the firm’s next stage.
Matthews’ appointment highlights a growing trend of leaders moving between law and professional services in Australia. Nexia Sydney, one of the country’s top fifteen accounting firms, aims to blend legal experience with accounting expertise to drive growth and support clients.
