Key Background:

A rising LinkedIn profile has helped paralegal Xiao Pan secure a training contract at Witan Solicitors, the national law firm has confirmed.

A graduate of the University of Law, Pan recently gained recognition as one of the top 20 legal LinkedIn influencers, ranking 15th in a list published by marketing agency TBD. She has increased her online presence over the past few years, using the platform to share awareness about her legal career.

Although the firm stressed that her promotion was based on merit, Witan Solicitors’ director and solicitor-advocate Qarrar Somji acknowledged that Pan’s growing visibility on LinkedIn added weight to her credentials.

“LinkedIn has emerged as one of the avenues that lawyers can use to gain credibility, initiate discussions, and even generate business,” Somji said. “When an individual like Xiao demonstrates that they can be part of thought leadership, generate confidence with people outside of the company, and drive discussion in the field, then it gets attention. The managers are also looking, and in the case of Xiao, it helped bring the leader to the perception that she was ready to take the next step.”

Pan’s recognition comes from TBD’s quarterly ranking system, which calculates a “power score” based on engagement metrics such as likes and comments. Between April and June this year, Pan achieved a total score of 7,948, placing her among the most influential independent legal professionals working in smaller and boutique practices.

Reflecting on her journey, Pan said she initially turned to LinkedIn to build confidence and connect with others. “I discovered that LinkedIn could be more than an online CV for me. In response, I had started to blog about what my normal really became like, what I was learning, what I was struggling to wrap my head around. The response was unexpected and encouraging.”

Somji added that while LinkedIn is not a direct path to promotion, it can be a powerful tool for junior lawyers to stand out. “There is no need to chase the likes and followers; that is a trap. The trick is to develop engagement, on brand content that is capable of generating a genuine dialogue or even translate to business”, he said.

Pan will now begin her role as a trainee solicitor, marking the next step in her legal career.
