This marks the official announcement made by Qualcomm regarding the acquisition of generative AI division of Hanoi based VinAI. DeepMind scientist Hung Bui established the AI research company and has been building it’s portfolio with sophisticated AI solutions the company takes pride in. Their products center around generative AI vision and language modeling for automotive applications across security, in cabin monitoring, and intelligent mobility systems. With support from the conglomerate Vingroup of Vietnam, VinAI has over 200 employees in Vietnam and international offices in Australia and the USA.
This move is part of Qualcomm’s strategy to enhance its AI-enabled solutions for consumer and business segments. VinAI’s talents will contribute to Qualcomm’s AI integration into its ecosystem products, which include smartphones, personal computers, and automotive technologies. Senior Vice President Engineering at Qualcomm, Jilei Hou, stated that the acquisition of VinAI’s AI skilled workforce will enable Qualcomm to innovate in AI, thus making its chipsets and software offerings more relevant in the competitive marketplace.
Ensining Jistrengohama, MDandis Ai Hung Bui of VinAI commented the acquisition positively, noting that his team’s skills and experiences in generative AI and ML will surely assist in advancing Qualcomm’s future AI capabilities. Under the agreement, Bui will assist Qualcomm as a direct employee to support development of AI R&D programs.
Together with earlier purchase of Edge Impulse, a German AI and IoT company in March, this has made Qualcomm’s second major acquisition of the year with AI focus. The company’s appears core strategy is to focus on edge AI, Amon says, which will be processed on the devices, rather than move through the cloud toenforceing as the center of the cloud.
